Pterygium growths are caused by sun exposure and chronic irritation from spending a lot of time outdoors in windy, dusty, warm (and sunny) climates, such as Los Angeles.

In many instances, a Pterygium growth can cease to grow but can then become inflamed, cause eye redness, and some itching. In other instances, a Pterygium continues to grow and can envelope the eye’s pupil thereby impeding clear vision.

Lesser Pterygium symptoms are a feeling similar to an irascible dust particle or two floating around your eye.

If left untreated, a Pterygium can grow into the cornea causing astigmatism which is a distortion of the shape of the cornea. The distortion, in turn, can cause blurred vision.

Pterygium and astigmatism are not contagious.

Pterygium can affect one eye or both eyes. If it affects two eyes, we refer to it as bilateral Pterygium.

An underappreciated aspect of a Pterygium is the cosmetic result.  Pterygium growths distort the natural look of the eye and then there’s the red eye which can cause patients to be more self-conscious about their looks. It can affect their personal and professional lives.

Many of our patients are even asked if they are using drugs because their eyes are so frequently red.
